Being a caregiver is an incredibly difficult job. Not only do caregivers have to provide physical and emotional care for their loved ones, but they also have to take on the responsibility of being a financial manager, advocate, and more. It’s no wonder that many caregivers find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer number of challenges they face every day.

We at Maritona Health Services, Inc. care about and want to help you manage these challenges. Remember, you deserve just as much care as those around you!

1. Isolation

Caring for a loved one demands that you spend a lot more time with them and less time with friends and other activities. You’ll find yourself pulling out of activities you’d have otherwise engaged in just so you can be there for them. You’ll spend so much time caring for them that you may not have time to care for yourself. Then the feeling of isolation may begin to set in.

If you start to feel isolated, you should seek help. Ask another family member or a professional caregiver to stand in for you while you take out some time for yourself. Invite friends over and enjoy good moments with them. Speak to a random stranger at the mall or any other suitable place. It could be just a compliment. Find a support group. There you can meet and interact with people going through similar challenges. A reassurance that you are not alone.

2. Stress

Caring for a loved one comes with a truckload of tasks. From managing medications to their hygiene, feeding, and other activities they might need help with. These can make a person feel stressed. If you feel stressed, take breaks. Taking some minutes to walk and calm your mind would go a long way. You could do this when the person you’re caring for is asleep.

Ask for help from other family members or hire a caregiver. This will relieve you from a lot of work. Practice breathing exercises, as these have a therapeutic effect on stress. You’ll be better equipped to handle stress when you do these. And don’t neglect your own health. Eat well, rest well, and exercise regularly.

3. Financial responsibilities

Bills for medications, hospital bills, and the cost of supplies, such as food and medical equipment, cannot be ignored. In addition, you may find yourself forgoing that job or career that would have brought you some income because your older loved one needs your time.

If you feel financially burdened, ask other family members for help. Take advantage of services such as those that offer discounts for seniors on groceries, restaurants, medical supplies, etc. Rather than buying new medical equipment, check to see if there are any you could rent.
